Meet the director of The Addams Family, Carolyn Coulson! She is returning to SSMT after directing 2014’s The King and I and Mary Poppins, the second of which has been honored by DCMetroTheatreArts in its lists of Best Musicals at Professional Theatres and Best Directors of Musicals at Professional Theatres.
Hailing from California’s Bay Area, Carolyn has performed, taught and directed across the country and in England and Canada. She was seen on stage in SSMT’s Les Misérables, Shrek (Mama Ogre/Mama Bear), and Legally Blonde (Paulette). Regionally, she has worked with companies such as TheatreWorks (CA), Center REP, Sierra Repertory Theatre, Centenary Stage Company, San Jose Stage Company and The Rosemary Branch in London.
Carolyn trained at Santa Clara University and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, holds an MA and PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Connecticut, and is an internationally known specialist in staging Medieval Drama. She has published articles and frequently gives presentations at international conferences on early drama, is featured on several original-pronunciation recordings of medieval drama, and serves on the board of the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society. She loves directing medieval plays and making them accessible to modern students and audiences. Favorite projects have been directing Shenandoah Conservatory students in “The Chester Nativity” (performed in Toronto) and “Robin Hood and the Potter” (performed in original pronunciation).
Carolyn is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Shenandoah Conservatory, where her classes include Acting Shakespeare, Movement for Actors, and History of Theatre. Favorite productions at Shenandoah include Assassins, The Secret Garden, 1 Henry IV, The Crucible, and Noises Off.
